Junior First LEGO League Night

Junior LEGO league at the Radisson Hotel

We have spent many weeks working hard on our project.Yesterday we finally got to display our project at the Radisson Hotel. We displayed our robotics along with many other schools from all over Galway. We had a fantastic evening of show and tell, dancing, cheerleading and entertainment.

More robotics

We followed the tutorials and made many interesting things. It was challenging but we loved it.
We made two twirling birds that rotate, a crocodile who's mouth opens and closes and a boat which rocks back and forth!

A visitor

Tony Reidy is a secondary school teacher. His class do the First Lego League every year.Tony showed us how to program his LEGO robot. We found out that it is very similar to our Junior LEGO league!

Robotics

We are getting very good at following the instructions, assembling the lego and programming it on the computer.

Final LEGO session

Monday, May 30th, 2011

Today was our last LEGO session before our presentation evening in the Radisson hotel on June 9th.  We have designed and made our inventions, and designed and made our "Show Me" posters.  Today we finished off all we could.  We are looking forward to seeing other schools at the presentation evening.  We think it will be a fun evening for all.

Robotics in Second Class

Our school has been extremely lucky to have been chosen as one of the first ever schools in Ireland and the UK to have been introduced to the Lego WeDo robotics. We will be making lego structures and then programming them on the computer to perform different functions. We had our first lesson today with our kits. We could programme a motor to work.It was a lot of fun.We worked well in our teams.

More inventing and engineering

Here are some of today's inventions:
  • a moving pathway (or stairs) that will help doctors get to their patients more quickly
  • an automatic wheelchair
  • an automatic trolley

Here are videos of our designs in motion (we programmed them ourselves)

Dr Dave looks for our inspiration

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

With our LEGO Body Forward project we have been talking about our bodies, and our muscles and bones in particular.  Today we were really really fortunate to have had a visit from a radiologist (He's the doctor that takes X-rays and can tell from the X-ray what is wrong and how to go about fixing it).  We had lots of questions for Doctor Dave.  He showed us how to feel for our pulses and explained that we are feeling the blood beating from the heart and travelling through the arteries to the fingers.  After playtime in the yard we could really feel our hearts and pulses racing.

We asked Doctor Dave would he like us to invent something to help make his job easier.  He had some great suggestions (a high bed for a baby that could have sides which would pop up and stop the baby falling off the bed, an automatic trolley that could be programmed to wheel the patient to radiology, or a fake leg or arm that would work for a person who was missing their leg or arm).  We're on to it Doctor Dave......wait till you see what we invent.  Your job is going to be so much easier!!

Thanks again to Dave for coming to visit and helping us with our project.

The completed solar train: Senior Infants

Teacher has got it working.  The problems were:  The wheels weren't pushed in enough and the wheels needed to  be filed down a little.  It works now, but is not really strong.  It's quite a small motor for such a big train.

Solar Powered Bullet Train in Senior Infants

Monday, March 14th, 2011
Inspired by our LEGO robotics, teacher bought a make-it-yourself Solar-Powered-Bullet-Train.
The pieces look like our LEGO pieces, but a little smaller.
We started making it today, but ran out of time.  We will finish it tomorrow.
